Make over... maybe

So, it's been a while. I think if I'm to blog more, I'm going to need some motorvation. Given some 'can be arsed' I will be changing the appearance and perhaps even some coding enhancements!

But for now, enjoy this misty pic of canary wharf

Poweh
I reckon the most useful superpower would be teleportation. Yes.

Ian Hislop

I saw Ian Hislop (along with some Private Eye staff) earlier this week. They were doing a book signing with the release of the latest Private Eye Annual. A small crowd did gather but comments didn't stretch far from "ooh, isn't he the guy from telly? Oh, what's his name... that bald one in the middle".

It means nothing to me but Monty Panesar (something to do with cricket...) did a book signing a few weeks ago at the same place.

London fire

Check it out, this was the view from my office in Canary Wharf last Monday. Some scary stuff but people remained calm and there was even an email letting people know there was no immediate threat (and to get back to work!).

The working man

It's been a good while since my last update, so what's the deal? Let's back track a little first.

The 21st June 2007 marked the end of 4 years of student life at University, it was the graduation of my efforts studying Computer Science & Engineering at Surrey. That's right ladies and gentlement, I am now a Bachelor of Science!

So anyways, armed with my newly acquired degree I merrily went on my quest for employment. I had some ups and downs with interviews (mainly downs...) but I did get good work with a good company. On 1st October 2007, I was officially employed as a Technical Analyst at Broadridge Financial Solutions Ltd.

I can't describe how cool this job is. I joined under the Graduate Scheme which meant I was joined by 15 other grads from varying backgrounds. The training was great, we were introduced to the financial market (with equity, bonds and all that jazz) and the products. I've been working for 'real' for two weeks now and aside from a few "What the hell is going on..." moments, it's going quite nicely. The people are all great and we get treated very well by the company (we had pizzas 3 times during the first 2 weeks and every Friday we get "Friday Treats" meaning we help ourselves to sweets and snacks!).

The office is based in Canary Wharf, London's financial district. There are good and bad points though. The good: Zone 2, less tourists, better looking than central, nice view from the office. The bad: reliant on the Jubilee line, no more concept of personal space on tubes/trains, £323 per month on travel costs. The ugly: 2 hours door-to-door from Horsham, 4 hours round trip, up at 6am and home by 7pm, experience of new smells on the tubes/trains. But hey, it's all part of being a commuter.

So all-in-all, I'm pretty satisfied of how things are. Interesting job with real challenges, meeting new people, getting paid - the world is my oyster... oh how I miss the student life!

oh my science...
Just now, I logged into facebook and thought to myself "hmm... I wonder how their database tables are structured?".

It seems like I've matured on to some whole new level of nerdism. I must harness this power...

Results!
Today I got my final set of exam results and... *drumrolls* I did well enough to get a degree with First Class Honours!

The marks were up and down but I did well overall. B33r all around!

Ground Work
Been working on the layout of the site, I tried a few things and they all turned out horrible! You'd think that 8 years of browsing the Internet would give you some ideas for designs.

Finalised on the design, going on the "minimalist" theme and I think it looks good - it also has plenty of room for expansion. The actual table layout took ages to do, never go without some sort of design on paper first!
